since one week i use a new mouse. finding a new mouse as a left-handed person isnt easy.

in july 2001 i bought a Logitech MouseMan Wheel Optical.
the blue light at the top of the mouse was quite nice and the mouse
feels good in my hand. i didnt switch the mouse layout to left handed
in my operation system, because i share some other computers with
right-handed persons so i have to reconfigure the machines at any time
i access them.

so i am a left-handed person using the mouse with the left hand but configured for the right hand.

after 4 years of using this mouse some buttons didnt react exact
anymore. i got double clicks nearly all the time so i have to buy a new
one. but which one ?

i am not the gaming freak, who wants the
latest modell with the latest features. but i need a new mouse device.
so i started a walk through a local computer store last week to find a
new one.

some weeks ago i catched a news, that razor is launching a new model called razor copperhead. at the store i saw the previous model razor diamondback
for about 30 bucks. the new model costs about 70 bucks. i bought the
diamondback and feel happy since then. the mouse is verry comfortable.
as a lefty i am now able to use the buttons at the side. the 2 meter
cable with the gold connector also fits my needs.

another
goodie is that the mouse comes with a little bag, where you can put
your mouse in during travel or so .. verry good .. so for 30 bucks i am
happy as a left handed mouse user can be :-)

today i had to check some simple mathematical problems + and - things.

there are a huge amount of paper laying around my desk, the computer is
filled with a lot of data sheets and one piece of agents is calculating
wrong, financial wrong. so where is the heck ? erp export ?
converting engine ? transport ? transformation ? import ? some variuos
SAP routines ? j2ee rendering and presentation layer ?

so i
started looking the bug. the main job was addition, multiplication and
% calculating with correct roundings. mh. whats the next calculator
around ? the standard calc on my computer is too slow for a large
amount of values. i can not go back. oh, lets take the new z22 i got
yesterday. i installed easycalc. but same problem. outsch.

mh, lets remember which unit is next. ahh. i forgot. my swiss army
knife in such cases. HP4x :) i own two units, a HP48G and a HP49G. the
HP48G is always in my bag, for such cases.

with its RPN logic
it works perfect for financial calculating. you got an endless stack.
can see everything in one place and do massive simple calculations in
seconds, not minutes with storing and remembering sub results. just
calculate and let the result in the stack, where you can get it later
with ease.

Jan Lukasiewicz developed in 1920 a formal logic
system which allowed mathemacial expressions to be specified without
parentheses by placing the operators before (prefix notation) or after
(postfix notation) the operands.

lets give a small example.

normal expression, more human readable, (2 + 3) * 5

prefix notation * 5 + 2 3 or * + 2 4 5

postfix notation 2 3 + 5 * or 5 3 2 + *

The prefix notation is also known as Polish Notation. The first
calculators of HP adopted the postfix notation. they adding a stack to
hold the operands and functions to reorder the stack. HP named this
technology Reverse Polish Notation RPN in honor of Lukasiewicz.

This way of handling operands was verry efficient for computer based
math operations. the computer can scan the input from left to right.
operands are simply placed into a LIFO stack, last in first out. so
operators are immediately applied to the operands at the bottom of the
stack. on almost all modern computers the statements where translated
to RPN for faster execution.

in my opinion RPN outperforms
normal algebraic expression in complex calculations, which exists a lot
in science calculations. now you may say, that calculating with RPN is
slower than doing it the normal way. but i can tell you, in sum you are
faster with RPN !!

during my college i was the only guy, who
used a RPN based calculator. my friends told me, that they can
calculate faster and they dont understand, why i use a "slow" HP48. so
we started a test and we started to compare the calculating of some
tasks. it was quite funny. it was a complex calculation "strength of
materials". after 50-60 minutes we got the results. we were 6 people
with 6 different results. I was the last one who finished. everybody
laughed .. I thought I was wrong but I could not found any mistakes in
my calculation, checking the stack and sub results.

so
everybody started to recalculate the results in 30 minutes. so we got 3
different results now. i got the same result from the first round and
three friends got the same result like me now. so the other two friends
started looking for their mistake and after 15 minutes they fixed the
results.

now I started laughing, because I was the one, who
got after 60 minutes the right result. and all other failed in the
first round!!!!! after 50 minutes they thought they got the result. but
they were wrong. they need 80 minutes or nearly 100 minutes then me.
the double time.

so RPN rulez !

why they failed ?
they used "complex" algebraic expressions, TI-89 and TI-92. they dont
see each subresults, so they can not see errors in detail. they had to
reenter complex expressions again and again, if they got a typo after
execution.

lets go back to business.

ps. at hpcalc.org you will find emulators for variuos plattforms ..

today a palm z22 arrived here for testing purpose. lets summarize my first impressions.

this unit looks apple like, with the white plastic surface. i think the
z22 looks a little bit cheaper than an old palm 3/IV/V device. but hey.
you get for 100 bucks a 200MHz unit with 32 MB storage, where you can
use 20 MB, and a touchpad stuff and fun.

i think the display in conjunction with the large stick isnt really
usable for me. the display is too small. lets see these days, how sync
will work. currently i am open for the language i want to implement the
sync stuff. at this stage it will be a small gui wrappe application
developed using realbasic and in mind of server usage the backend will
be php-cli.

what i will explore next is the small cost management applikation, which is built in, and then continue working ..

these days i will do a major plattform switch of my working
environment. these switch includes nearly all gear i use for my
business, including computer, operating system, mobile, production gear
and stuff.

first major move is to switch development back to a microsoft based
operation system. why dont continue with apple mac ? let me introduce,
why i switched to apple mac. the operation system is based on BSD, did
i mentioned, that the operation system is based on BSD :-) ?

you start your mac and you can start developing with one download,
apple dev support. you get a working JRE outofthebox, supported by
apple. you can also get all major dev stuff you want, like eclipse and
other services. doing some office stuff isnt a problem using open
office. i can run my favorite mind managing tool called freemind.
opera, mozilla, scite, eclipse and X is working. what i also like is
the network profile stuff. working verry well for. i know that you can
install network profile tools on windows, but hey, you need to install
such a tool. it is not working out of the box. and for me such a
service need to be included in an operation system for shure!!

my mac box is verry stable and it runs verry well, also under heavy load. where your windows box feels "dead", the mac goes on.

lets come to expose. nice thing man. you can handle a huge amount of
windows and applications at one time. nice job. i also like the main
toolbar/navbar concept.

thats why i switched to mac.

lets come to another part, entertainment and the "woman factor". all
applications at the mac looks nice. animations and nice effects all
over your desktop, without perfomance loses. the hardware looks verry
nice.

after a while i began to explore some other built-in application.
itunes works well. i love iphoto. safari is too slow i think, but it
works using firefox :-). ical and isync are also working well. these
things are built-in an shipped with every mac without any additional
installation. nice job.

lets come over to the reasons, why i left my apple.

the keyboards sucks. i use the built-in of my powerbook and i miss
direct access to some keys. where the hell is | in german layout ? and
{[]} ? what about DEL ? fn+backspace. thanx man. this reduced my
productivity a lot. i am able to stroke about 300 keys per minute, if i
want. but not at such a keyboard, where all major chars are not direct
available .. what about POS1 or END ? all done via Fn-key. that sucks. i need direct access to such keys.

another thing is that dont know the shortcut for switching through
different windows in one application ? the concept is that one
application has a huge amount of different windows opened. i dont like
this, if i am not able to switch between these windows using my
keyboard. i have to use the mouse. hell. this sucks.

i didnt found a emulation tool like VMware for mac, where i can emulate
different machine states? i didnt found an ER DB design tool. i didnt
found a small picture manipulation tool. i dont like the keyboard and
application behaviour. these facts decreases my productivity.

here is a list of things, i will still use. iphoto for my picture
management, tests of my applications running under mac, itunes for
filling my ipod. watching dvd. do mobile notes using freemind. using
for wlan access outside the world. using sticky notes. posing in
customer environments. ical. mh. thats it.

this my new babe will arrive, a small 13" sony vaio S with all features
expanded to the max. hope everythings works fine, so that i can move my
amd-x64 back to my home for gaming purposes only :-)

powebook for mobile entertainment, sony vaio s for mobile business, amd-x64 for playing battlefield2 :-)

these days i posted an entry about VMware player. with this tool you
can prepare a virtual machine and use this machine for free at another
computer without the need of VMware Workstation, ~ 350 bucks worth. i
prepared some dev environment using freebsd and linux, to improve
testing and integration. verry useful. i think, that some one will soon
release a bunch of ready to run dev environments, based on vmware
player.

another usage of vmware player is a testing environment of so called
"liveCD" operation systems like knoppix or freesbie. you can prepare a
small virtual machine, containing a network card, cdrom and a little
bit memory, to boot into an iso file and test a machine, without
rebooting your host machine.

i am verry busy right now,
finishing some projects. i hope, that i can soon provide such an image,
but since then, there too much items on my todo list ..
